Rick Abbott was born on August 31, 1950 in Schenectady, New York. Soon thereafter his family moved to Decatur, Ill where he spent his childhood. He received his B.A. in Biology from Colorado College in 1972. After completing a four-year tour of duty with the Air Force, he attended Baylor College of Medicine graduating there in 1980. He then did a one-year rotating internship at Baylor Affiliated Hospitals in Houston, TX followed by a 5 year residency in Neurosurgery, finishing in June, 1986. He traveled to New York City in 1986 to serve as clinical fellow in pediatric neurosurgery under Dr. Fred J. Epstein at New York University Medical Center. He was then appointed to the faculty of New York University rising to the rank of Associate Professor prior to leaving that institution in 1996 to help in the establishment of the Institute for Neurology and Neurosurgery at Beth Israel Hospital in Manhattan. While there, he served as the fellowship director for pediatric neurosurgery and participated in the education of 10 fellows He was the acting director of Pediatric Neurosurgery from 2001 to 2004. In 2004, he joined the faculty at Montefiore Medical Center where he is a Clinical Professor of Neurosurgery at the Children’ Hospital.
Dr Abbott has held numerous posts in the national and international pediatric neurosurgery organizations. He has served as the Treasurer, Secretary, Chairperson-Elect and Chairperson of the AANS/CNS Joint Section for Pediatric Neurosurgery; Treasurer and Secretary for the American Society of Pediatric Neurosurgeons; Scientific Program Chair, Treasurer, President-elect and President of the International Society for Pediatric Neurosurgery; and Chairman of the Credentials Committee of the American board of Pediatric Neurological Surgery. He is a Geographical Editor for Child’s Nervous System. He has given numerous invited lectures, including the Bruce Hendricks Lecture at Sick Childrens Hospital in Toronto and the Visiting Professor Lecture at the University of British Columbia. He has authored 57 peer reviewed manuscripts and 20 book chapters in addition to editing two books.
Dr Abbott has been married to Elaine Abbott for over 30 years and has two grown boys. He enjoys Maine where he spends too little time photographing, hiking and sailing.
