G. Michael Lemole, Jr., MD is the professor and chair (interim) of the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Arizona (UA) and Banner University Medical Center in Tucson (BUMCT). Dr. Lemole has expertise in all aspects of skull base disease including minimally-invasive endoscopic techniques, classical open approaches, and radiosurgical treatments. He serves as co-director of the UA Center for Sinonasal and Skull Base Tumors. He previously served as Chief of Staff (BUMCT).
Dr. Lemole’s clinical interests include diseases of the cranial base. His focus is on creating multidisciplinary teams of surgeons and specialists who collaborate to offer the full range of cutting-edge surgical, radiosurgical, and medical treatments for patients with brain and spine disorders.
In his previous position at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), Dr. Lemole headed the UIC Skull Base Multidisciplinary Program. He also served as co-director of the Chicago CyberKnife™ Radiosurgery Center at Advocate Christ Medical Center.
Dr. Lemole received his undergraduate degree from Harvard University and his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania. He completed his residency in 2002 in neurological surgery at Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix. At Barrow he completed fellowships in Complex Spinal Surgery and Cerebrovascular/Skull Base Surgery. He pursued international training in Austria after being awarded the Congress of Neurological Surgeons Cushing Clinical Fellowship.
Dr. Lemole has generated more than 95 publications and book chapters. He is a member of several medical societies, including the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, and the North American Skull Base Society. Dr. Lemole is a frequent invited lecturer and teaches at specialty and society courses.
Dr. Lemole also received a Congressional Citation in 2011 for services rendered to U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords.
During his neurosurgery training, Dr. Lemole joined the United States Air Force Reserve at Luke Air Force Base just outside of Phoenix. There he served as a flight surgeon with the 944th ASTS. Dr. Lemole was also privileged to serve as the honorary commander for the 355th Medical Group, Davis Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson.
Dr. Lemole resides in Tucson, AZ with his wife and five children.
