Daniel Yoshor is the Marc J. Shapiro Professor and Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at Baylor College of Medicine. Born and raised in New York, he received a B.A. in philosophy from Yeshiva University in 1989, and graduated from medical school at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine in 1993. He then completed neurosurgical residency at Baylor College of Medicine under Dr. Robert G. Grossman, where he developed a research interest in neurophysiology. Following residency, he completed a clinical fellowship in epilepsy and brain tumor surgery at the University of California San Francisco with Nicholas Barbaro and Mitchel Berger. After completing clinical training in 2000, he returned to Houston to join the faculty at Baylor College of Medicine. As a junior faculty member at Baylor, Dr. Yoshor was mentored by Dr. Raymond Sawaya as a neurosurgeon and by Dr. John H.R. Maunsell in the laboratory. In the Maunsell lab, Dr. Yoshor’s training in systems neuroscience research was supported by an NINDS K08 Award.
An active clinical neurosurgeon, Dr. Yoshor’s practice is focused exclusively on cranial surgery, with a particular emphasis on epilepsy surgery, brain tumor microsurgery, and endoscopic pituitary and skull base surgery. He has extensive experience in clinical brain mapping and in the development and clinical implementation of novel neurotechnologies, including experience as an investigator in clinical trials of a chronically implanted multi-electrode brain stimulation device developed for the treatment of epilepsy, and in an early feasibility trial of a cortical visual prosthetic. He currently serves as chief of neurosurgery at Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center, the primary adult teaching hospital of Baylor College of Medicine, a role he has held since 2010.
As an educator, Dr. Yoshor was program director for the Baylor neurosurgery residency program from 2008-2016, and received the Fulbright & Jaworski L.L.P. Faculty Excellence Award for Educational Leadership in 2012. The program includes 25 residents, with rotations at five major hospitals in the Texas Medical Center: Baylor St. Luke’s, Texas Children’s, Ben Taub, MD Anderson, and the Houston VAMC. He remains deeply involved in resident education as department chair, and serves as principal investigator for Baylor’s NINDS R25 Research Education Training Grant.
As a visual neuroscientist, Dr. Yoshor is an established principal investigator with NIH R01, DARPA, and VA Merit Award funding. Work from his laboratory has been published in leading scientific journals including Journal of Neuroscience, Cerebral Cortex, Current Biology, eLife, PNAS, Nature Medicine, and Nature Neuroscience. His long-term research goals are to better understand how neural activity in sensory cortex is linked to perception, and to develop a cortical visual prosthetic that employs stimulation of human visual cortex to restore vision to the blind, in collaboration with a larger team of scientists, engineers, and clinicians.
Dr. Yoshor’s wife, Shira, grew up in Charleston, South Carolina. She is currently a partner in a major national law firm headquartered in Houston, as well as a leader in a number of local and national charitable and civic organizations. They have four children, Rebecca, Zachary, Benjamin, and Jordana, who share their enthusiasm for basketball, travel, reading, and outdoor sports and recreation.
