Christopher C. Getch Fellowship
Dr. Patel graduated from the Rice-Baylor Medical Scholars Program. During that time, he worked under the tutelage of Dr. Huda Zoghbi, a Howard Hughes Medical Investigator and member of the National Academy of Sciences. He completed his residency at the Baylor College of Medicine and developed an interest in the treatment of brain tumors. He is now in his first year as faculty at Baylor and is focusing his practice on the treatment of brain tumors while he sets up his lab studying the molecular biology and genetics of brain tumors under the mentorship of Dr. Zoghbi.

Dr. Lucy He is a fourth year resident in neurological surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. She was born in China and grew up in Minnesota. She obtained her BSE in biomedical engineering from Duke University and MD (AOA) from Case Western Reserve University. She conducted a year of HHMI-funded basic science research in oncology prior to starting residency. Working under the mentorship of Dr. J Mocco, she plans to adapt modern mobile technologies to streamline how residents track cases and receive real-time feedback to improve resident education. Dr. He has an interest in both vascular and pediatric neurosurgery; she is currently enrolled in an enfolded endovascular fellowship.
CNS Innovation Fellowship
Luis E. Savastano was born in London, England in 1985 and grew up in Milan, Italy and in Mendoza, Argentina. During high school and college he played in the major argentine rugby league, captained the team in 2003 and played for the west national team during 2002-2005. He received the “Most Valuable Player” award in 2002. He entered the National University of Cuyo Medical School, an elite school in Argentina, aged 17 and graduated in 2009, as Valedictorian, ranking First in his Class, Summa cum laude, and Gold Medalist. He was a research fellow at the National Council of Scientific and Technical Research of Argentina (CONICET) from 2009 to 2011 and head of the Program of Experimental Neurosurgery of the Institute of Histology and Embryology of Mendoza. He received the “Young Investigator Award in Basic Research” of the National University of Cuyo in 2010. He completed his doctoral degree in neuroanatomy in 2011 with a thesis rated Summa cum laude that was published in a single-authored Treaty on Dissection Techniques of the Central and Peripheral Nervous System. He was then appointed Assistant Professor in the Department of Anatomy, Co-director of the Division of Investigation and Anatomical Dissection and head of the Anatomical Dissection Academy of the National University of Cuyo Medical School in 2011-2012. In 2012 he entered Neurosurgery residency training at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan. He is currently a third year resident and involved in the creation of an experimental neurosurgery translational lab for residents. He has published over 20 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, and he has given over 50 presentations in national and international meetings. He obtained the Neuroanatomy award of the Department of Neurosurgery in 2013. In 2014, he was elected by his peers to AANS Young Neurosurgeons Committee. He is interested in cerebrovascular and skull base surgery and his research interests include medical imaging, experimental surgery, history of medicine and surgical training. The focus and love of his life are his wife Romina and daughter Emilia.

Timothy Wen is a third year medical student at the Keck School of Medicine of USC. He received his undergraduate education in Biology and Political Science at UCLA and graduate training in Epidemiology from the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University. In graduate school, he developed an interest in health services and outcomes research and the application of large database analysis on these issues. As a medical student, he has applied this interest and conducted numerous studies looking into factors associated with neurosurgical outcomes and utilization patterns in a variety of neurosurgical subspecialties. With the CSNS/CNS fellowship, he plans to conduct an epidemiological study analyzing the factors, specifically racial and socioeconomic, associated with delay in treatment of cauda equina syndrome on a national level with his mentors Dr. William Mack, Dr. Arun Amar, and Dr. Steven Cen.
